There’s more to the world than what we see.
As leaders, we face daily challenges like budget constraints, hiring freezes, market contractions, and increasing complexity. It’s crucial to occasionally look up and notice the shifts shaping our future. These shifts will impact the business environment, government policies, and societal structures.
Power is captured by those who can create it.
While I’m not a technologist, I sense a significant shift in the world. This shift is hard to see and make sense of without expanding our understanding further. Leaders that have an expanded view have the ability to shape the future.
Many leaders experience AI fatigue. However, understanding where AI is heading in terms of power creation and capture is essential for grasping the power dynamics at play.
Beyond the immediate focus on AI, there's a global power play unfolding that will likely affect everyone and the planet.
Broadly, it’s about:
Who will own the world’s data.
How that data will be used in AI models to solve global-level problems.
Whether AI models will be generic or tailored for local-level problems across health, education, the environment, etc.
The effort to preserve cultures.
Whether value will be collected and captured by the few, particularly big tech, or by the many.
Understanding and navigating the centralised versus decentralised AI landscape is critical for leaders. By balancing global integration with local responsiveness, leaders can harness AI's power to drive progress and ensure sustainable growth for all.
If you want to rule the world, making a positive impact where it matters most to you, it’s key to see and make sense of the major shifts taking place beyond your lived experience and current worldview.
Do you see the world as it is, with the added dimension of power plays that are shaping the future? To see the world as it is, or as it has been, is to operate with a blindspot and potential biases.
