Is the Best in You Yet to Come?
Looking up to the status quo may be the greatest leadership risk.
If the best in you is yet to come - if you aspire to achieve next-level success as a leader or by developing a new product, service, or business, I wonder if the greatest risk lies in seeking leadership lessons from the status quo. An even greater risk may be conforming to dominant leadership styles, especially when these established leaders are in the twilight of their careers, self-removed from navigating the complexities and challenges of today’s world.
They don’t need to lead. And, you want to.
If you have years, or even decades, ahead of you, you’ll need to bypass the examples set on the current world stage. As we face economic downturns, environmental crises, and widespread war and conflicts, breaking away from conventional approaches may be crucial to achieving commercial and leadership success, as well as the needed transformative outcomes thqat our times demand.
To guide your thinking, consider this framework:
Am I surrounded by people who stretch me to achieve more with greater ease and impact?
Do I understand what is working in the world and how to harness it for my benefit, cutting through the stuck and stagnant that largely represents the status quo?
Am I working in a way that enables me to set and achieve ambitious goals with increased agency, embracing tools, technologies, and techniques to achieve outcomes on my terms?
